Claude Sonnet 5.5: Anthropic focuses on speed

Anthropic introduces a new Sonnet version, highlighting faster execution and lower token consumption.

A new Sonnet release

Anthropic announced Claude Sonnet 5.5 on September 28. The company describes it as faster than Sonnet 5 and cheaper per task through lower token consumption.

Why token consumption matters

An assistant may need several steps to answer: read an instruction, call a tool, examine its result and write a response. Each step can add processing time. Efficiency is therefore about more than displaying words faster; it can also mean taking a shorter route to complete the work.

This distinction helps explain cost announcements. The price of a unit of computation and the amount consumed are different things, much like fuel prices and fuel consumption on a journey.

What could users gain?

Shorter waits make repeated exchanges more comfortable: revising a paragraph or adjusting a function often takes several attempts. For an application, the same issue becomes an economic one when those operations happen at scale.

These gains are reported by the provider. They do not establish the time needed for every document or project: context length, tools and requested corrections also matter.
